Michael Jackson on Yahoo, Google users' minds

Who was on Americans' minds this year? Michael Jackson topped the biggest search among users of both Yahoo and Google looking to escape reality in 2009. The Internet's biggest search sites released Tuesday their top search trends for 2009, as well as terms related to specific categories, providing their annual peek into the American psyche. Jackson, the "King of Pop" who passed away earlier this year, topped the Yahoo search list for all categories, according to the Yahoo Year In Review. Jackson's sudden death in June prompted record-breaking traffic for Yahoo, but searches about the beleaguered singer continued throughout the year. In fact, all the top-ten search terms were entertainment-related. No. 2, "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," is the only film title to crack the top 10. Third is "World Wrestling Entertainment." Rounding out Yahoo's top 10 were actress Megan Fox and Britney Spears, who have been a mainstay on Yahoo's year-end lists since the company started releasing them in 2001. They were followed by Naruto, American Idol, Kim Kardashian, NASCAR, and Runescape. Vera Chan, a Yahoo Search trend analyst, said that stars like Fox and Kardashian, have replaced former tabloid magnets like Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and Jessica Simpson.

Cellphone tech can help the deaf speak in sign

For those who are deaf or hard of hearing, cell phone use has largely been limited to messaging. But technology is catching up: Researchers from Cornell university and their colleagues have created phones that allow deaf people to communicate in sign language – the same way hearing people use phones to talk.
Since the project, Mobile ASL (American Sign Language), started four years ago, the researchers have published several academic papers on their technology. The first prototypes were created last year and are now in the hands of 25 deaf people.

INSET:

Because the software requires efficient motion capture, the researchers had to also make video compression software that could deliver video at about 10 frames per second. They also had to work within the standard wireless 2G network, which only allows transmission of video at about 15-20kb per second. This is a relatively small amount of data when compared with an online video, which travels at about 600kb per second.
Researchers learned that the deaf often use only one hand to sign, depending on the situation.

And they found that when two people are talking to each other, they spend almost the entire time focused on the other person’s face.

Inbox2

Inbox2 is an application that collects all your mail (messages and content) and micro blogging updates from friends and contacts into a single activity stream. The activity stream can be sorted by contacts or the configured accounts – called ‘channels’. Your mail activity stream is always in sync. With all the content in one place, Inbox2 allows the use of smart labels and stars for messages and attachments. You can also import your existing labels from other services such as Gmail. Even better, in Inbox2 you can use labels for all your accounts and not just Gmail. Facebook users can now receive all their email and Twitter status updates from friends and contacts without having to leave their favourite platform. This stream is not part of the status update from friends but is tightly integrated with Facebook. The ability to send the same message to all your different contacts helps greatly. Type out a message and attach the files you want, like you normally would in an email, and simply add contacts from any of your email addresses or social networks. Awesome! Inbox2 is currently in beta, so it should only improve over time.

How to prevent hacker attacks

Most people think that hackers are only a problem for servers. This is not true. If your Windows PC is not properly configured, everything on your computer can easily be stolen or destroyed by hackers.

Here are some basic precautions to protect against hackers.

  1. Goto windowsupdate.microsoft.com at least once a week and install all critical patches. Run an antivirus program at least once a week. Update your virus signature files every time you use it.
  2. Use a firewall such as Zone Alarm. (Some firewalls have had major security problems. Be sure you have the latest update) Check your computer for trojans by clicking on: http://security.symantec.com, http://www.trojanscan.com
  3. Don't click on email attachments. Don't install Napster, Kazaa, ChainCast, or any software from an unknown source. The former will turn your computer into a server and the latter may contain trojans and viruses.
  4. Turn off sharing, especially on your C:\ and D:\ drive. This is very dangerous! If you must share a disk, make sure it requires a password. Otherwise, anyone in the Internet can use your computer to back up their files without your knowledge.
  5. Never share any folder without a password. Put a good password on your PC. If you have a password on your PC that is easy to guess, your computer can be easily taken over by hackers.
  6. A bad password would be things like 'password', '12345', your name, license plate number, or any word that could be found in an English dictionary or a dictionary in your native language.
  7. Report any network slowness or strange computer behavior so it can be checked by me (if it's a network problem) or Brad (if it's a Windows or Mac problem). Windows PCs with static IP numbers are especially easy targets.
  8. You should always set "Obtain an IP address automatically" in Windows unless you are running a server and you are knowledgeable in computer security.
Tips will be updated regularly.

Google Chrome Frame for Internet Explorer

Since its launch a year ago, Google Chrome has taken the world wide web by storm with its blazing fast page-rendering speeds. It is noticeably quicker than Mozilla Firefox or Apple Safari, and leaves Internet Explorer (IE) seem sluggish at best.
A few months ago, they released an add-on called Google Chrome Frame, which basically took over Internet Explorer’s page-rendering capabilities. In a nutshell, Chrome Frame has all the speed improvements of Google Chrome fit into IE. Microsoft was obviously not pleased with this development, and warned users that installing Chrome Frame would leave a serious security exploit open for hackers. Google initially declined this, but then confirmed the same last week, when they announced a new version of Chrome Frame, which patched the said security hole.
